Bacteria-Phage Models with a Focus on Prophage as a Genetic Reservoir

چکیده
Temperate bacteriophages have the ability to incorporate their genetic material in the host’s DNA, which may be utilized by later generations of phage to overcome the host’s receptorbased defences. This effect of temperance can have major implications for the long-term survival of the phages as well as on bacteria-phage community evolution. To study the impact of prophage on microbial communities we have developed models simulating lytic and lysogenic infection and host and phage coevolution with a focus on prophage-phage recombination. Our results show that recombination can be crucial for the phage to survive host diversification, and a higher incidence of lysogeny as opposed to lysis may favor the phage population in the long run. Moreover, depending on the nature of interaction between the hosts and phages, phageprophage recombination may promote overall diversity in the phage-host community or push the hosts towards ‘waves’ of innovation.

The Human Gut Phage Community and Its Implications for Health and Disease
In this review, we assess our current understanding of the role of bacteriophages infecting the human gut bacterial community in health and disease. In general, bacteriophages contribute to the structure of their microbial communities by driving host and viral diversification, bacterial evolution, and by expanding the functional diversity of ecosystems. Gut bacteriophages are an ensemble of uni...
متن کاملThe agricultural antibiotic carbadox induces phage-mediated gene transfer in Salmonella
Antibiotics are used for disease therapeutic or preventative effects in humans and animals, as well as for enhanced feed conversion efficiency in livestock. Antibiotics can also cause undesirable effects in microbial populations, including selection for antibiotic resistance, enhanced pathogen invasion, and stimulation of horizontal gene transfer. Carbadox is a veterinary antibiotic used in the...
متن کاملTranscription of the phage-encoded Panton-Valentine leukocidin of Staphylococcus aureus is dependent on the phage life-cycle and on the host background.
Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) is a pore-forming, bi-component toxin secreted by Staphylococcus aureus strains epidemiologically associated with diseases such as necrotizing pneumonia and skin and soft-tissue infections. Here we demonstrate that transcription of the phage-encoded PVL (encoded in the luk-PV operon) is dependent on two major determinants: the phage life-cycle and the host chro...
متن کاملCorrection: The Phloem-Sap Feeding Mealybug (Ferrisia virgata) Carries ‘Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus’ Populations That Do Not Cause Disease in Host Plants
'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' (Las) is the primary causal agent of huanglongbing (HLB), the most devastating disease of citrus worldwide. There are three known insect vectors of the HLB-associated bacteria, and all are members of the Hemiptera: Diaphorina citri (Psyllidae), Trioza erytreae (Triozidae), and Cacopsylla (Psylla) citrisuga (Psyllidae). In this study, we found that another hem...
متن کاملWhy Bacteriophage Encode Exotoxins and other Virulence Factors
This study considers gene location within bacteria as a function of genetic element mobility. Our emphasis is on prophage encoding of bacterial virulence factors (VFs). At least four mechanisms potentially contribute to phage encoding of bacterial VFs: (i) Enhanced gene mobility could result in greater VF gene representation within bacterial populations. We question, though, why certain genes b...
